TARA DROVE SLOWLY through the snowy streets, reading her map and scoping out the neighborhood. Luxurious homes, each with privacy fences, sat on five-acre lots. The custom-built homes possessed three-car garages and security systems, and were elegantly landscaped.

The sun was trying and failing to make an appearance through the stormy clouds. Checking her watch, she noted that it was just twelve forty-five.

She pulled into the empty brick drive, pleased the snow had already been plowed. Her prospect hadn't arrived, so she'd have time to explore the house before showing it. Hope swelled in her chest. If she could make this sale, she and Nicholas would have a cushion to fall back on from a hefty commission.

Stepping out of the car, she barely noticed the chill. Her gaze took in the trimmed hedges, the cherry tree in the front yard, the huge skylights in the steeply pitched cedar roof.

Her interest dropped from the roof to the wide eaves, then to one of the imposing stained-glass front doors that stood open wide to the cold.

Her neck prickled. Now what? Common sense told her not to enter the house. Anyone could be inside. But then maybe it was only that the last person to show the house had forgotten to lock the door. Or perhaps the wind had simply blown the door open.

Should she check with a neighbor? She looked east and west for a sign of activity. Her best bet would be to go across the street, ask if they'd seen anything unusual. But without interior lights shining or the driveway shoveled, that house appeared vacant.

She would have preferred to leave, but her obligation was to stay and warn her client. Otherwise, the client could arrive, walk into the house looking for her and come face-to-face with a possible burglar.

Her stomach clenched. She paced beside her car, reached in and leaned on the horn, hoping the noise would attract someone to her presence or scare an in-trader inside the house into leaving by a back door. The blare sent two crows soaring out of the cherry tree, and several squirrels scolded her from the roof.

Reluctant to approach the house, she waited thirty long, cold minutes in the drive. When no one showed, she edged her way to the front door and shouted, "Anybody home?"

Nothing but silence.

No matter how badly she wanted to get away, she couldn't leave the house open to vandals. With a quick flick of her arm, she reached inside, yanked the door shut and locked it. Spinning on her heel, she sprinted to the car.
